Learn to play the organ

Whatever your age, if you are already play the piano (Grade 5 or above), and want to learn another instrument, or are looking for a new challenge, the St John’s Organ Student Scheme could be for you!

In recent years the scheme has helped several students to learn the organ, giving them the skills to play at services in St John’s and other local churches. And earlier in 2014, the scheme was adopted by the Surrey Organists’ Association and offered to students around the Guildford Diocese.

The organ at St John’s is one of the finest in the area, and an ideal teaching instrument. Rather like an apprenticeship, students receive regular tuition and support, with opportunities (when sufficiently confident) to play just one or two items – a simple hymn or voluntary – during a service. Over a period (different for each student), they gain the skills and experience necessary to play for complete services. Some may also go on to take Associated Board or Royal College of Organists’ exams.
